Artist Statement Vladan Gajic -
existence and life

I explore the essence of existence and life in my work by means of abstract and minimalistic form, the search for pure shapes and ratios, the presence and absence of light and colour, and by use of gradients and growth as the basic principles of life. These topics run like a red thread through my work, and the references to my education in life sciences and to my abstract work in information technology are palpable.

Working as an interdisciplinary artist means that I use different media without feeling limited by their attributes. I allow a medium to expand beyond its immediate restrictions and create a synthesis with other media.

I approach a painting from a sculptor’s perspective. I often apply multiple layers of different media just to scrape parts of them off and reapply new layers. My work goes through stages like a living being, it evolves and builds upon its past. Intermediate stages that would work as a stand-alone piece are covered by layers of the new. Sometimes completely, sometimes only partially. The old layers persist through the structure they impose on the covering layers or by tinting the new layer of paint.

In my photography I explore new perspectives and create new realities. I use light as a brush, and the camera as my canvas. By moving my body together with the camera in space and time I transcend the limitation of a still image. Each photograph is unique and can’t be reproduced.
